Tourism
Martina Franca
The tourist
industry in
Martina Franca
forms a fair
portion of the
towns
resources
apart from
agriculture
and clothing.
The sublime
old town draws
tourists and
day visitors
from across
the world
eager to
stroll the
labyrinth of
streets and
alleys.
The
countryside
around the
town is
enchanting
with woods,
olive groves,
vineyards and
farms
scattered far
and wide
through the
tangle of tiny
lanes lined
with dry-stone
walls. Trulli,
those famed
old cone
shaped homes
built from the
same local
limestone dot
the fields,
some in ruins
and others
laboriously
restored to
form fine
houses, or
holiday homes.
Try a visit to
the Martina
Franca market
on the Via
Giulio
Recupero on
wednesday
mornings to
see the
produce in
season
supplied and
often sold
directly by
the local
farmers and
small holders
alongside
clothes,
hardware,
cheese, meat,
household
goods and
plants.
The climate of
Martina Franca
ensures
visitors
pleasant
weather during
spring and
autumn, hot
summers and
mild winters
(although they
can be quite
wet). The
really busy
period is in
August and
Easter, with
the rest of
the year
surprisingly
quiet and free
of crowds.
For tourists
basing
themselves in
the town there
are plenty of
tours and
excursions to
other beauty
spots within
easy driving
distance.
Among some of
the most
popular are a
visit to
Alberobello
which
considers
itself as home
of the trulli
where you can
wander through
whole streets
of them,
Polignano
with its
breathtaking
cliff top
situation and
stunning
vistas,
Ostuni
with its
immaculate
walled citadel
astride a hill
overlooking
the coast or
the medieval
centre of
Cisternino
just over 7
miles east
along the
Valle d'Itria.
Eleven miles
north toward
the sea is
Fasano
City and its
valley of cave
houses, plus
the excavated
ruins of
Egnazia. Head
to the coast
then north
towards Bari
for about 15
minutes will
bring you to
Monopoli
on your right,
a pleasant
place to while
away a day.
